  • Rita Borodiyanski

Crossing the Line Crossing the Line Screenwriter: Rita Borodiyanski Producer: Osnat Saraga , Paramount Israel (Ananey Studios) Language: Hebrew Format: 8 Episodes x 35 Minutes Send PITCHDECK LOGLINE How low must one go in order to climb up, when planning for the future is considered a luxury? Street-smart Liz finds family and future at the most unexpected place - checkpoints on the West Bank-Israeli border. SYNOPSIS The story of Liz Angel (22), who starts working at the checkpoints – where only the truly desperate work. For her it’s a perfect job: her co-workers come from similar backgrounds as her, and the position includes free food, transportation and housing, in a small shared trailer which soon turns into her own little slice of heaven. Her genuine home keeps pulling her back in, and her parents’ piling debts demand. What starts out as a small scale smuggling from the West Bank into Israel, will soon blow out of proportion. WRITER'S STATEMENT Crossing The Line is inspired by my experience as a soldier inspecting at checkpoints. It offers a look at young people today, coming from impoverished backgrounds on both sides of the border, willing to do whatever it takes for a better life. They are risking their jobs, national security and loved ones’ safety. Considering others is a privilege to those busy surviving. It’s a story of survival on life’s sidelines. Bringing this world to the screen from a feminine POV is a mission to me. ABOUT THE WRITER Director, screenwriter and casting director. Two-time nominee of the Ophir Awards. Her short film, “TIME OUT”, won the L.A Holly Shorts Best Thriller Award and was nominated for an Ophir Award. Today, Rita is about to start filming her debut full feature film “YOUNG MOTHER” – which won grants and awards and was developed at the Nantes Film Workshop (France). “CHECKPOINTS”, full length film, has won various awards -Haifa Film Festival, Cyprus ME Film Festival, WIFTI International and Sam Spiegel Film Lab, as well as receiving the Rabinovitch Fund development grant. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT Rita’s story is based on her own, not simple life experience. Rita's POV is a unique feminine look that brings a new voice of young people who have under zero chances nowdays in Israel to make something of their lives. The story setting is placed brilliantly by Rita, at the checkpoints– an explosive point of emotions in the heart of the conflict of our region. Rita has won the right to tell this story. • Chen Shumowitz

The Parasite The Parasite Screenwriter: Chen Shumowitz Producer: Marek Rozenbaum , Transfax Productions Language: Hebrew Format: Send PITCHDECK LOGLINE Scarred by a traumatic breakup, a dedicated social worker at a women's shelter encounters a charismatic man who promises the life of her dreams. Despite her professional expertise, she’s oblivious to the red flags and succumbs to his charms. When she tries to break free, she discovers it's too late. SYNOPSIS Daphne is a dedicated social worker at a women’s shelter working with teenage girls who moved there with their mothers. After a painful breakup, Daphne's sister persuades her to join a empowerment workshop. That’s where she meets Elad. From the moment the two started sharing their secrets, they’re completely inseparable. She’s flattered by his acts of jealousy, he dreams of the day they start a family. Elad moves in with Daphne, and soon enough he proposes. Moral is a bright teenager from the shelter and in love with Johnny, a juvenile delinquent. Their relationship worries Daphne. She fears that Moral, a skilled athlete, will get carried away and stop training regularly. When Elad loses his job, he grows more and more demanding of Daphne’s attention. His neediness charms her; she’s never met such a sensitive man. During a tasting for their upcoming wedding, Daphne is urgently called to the shelter. Moral’s father has found the shelter’s address and is there now, trying to convince Moral’s mother to get back with him. Elad feels betrayed and upset that Daphne left at such a crucial moment. He keeps looking for faults in the way Daphne conducts herself, indicating her loyalty to Moral as the reason their relationship went awry. They fight endlessly, to the point of mutual acts of violence. Daphne informs Elad that she wants to postpone their wedding and take some time off. Reminding her that she is the biggest advocate of people’s ability to change, Elad uses all kinds of manipulations and begs her not to give up on him, on them. Daphne forgives him and their relationship is seemingly back on track. But after she falls asleep he secretly installs a spyware app on her phone. Despite Daphne's professional expertise, she’s oblivious to the red flags and succumbs to his charms. The series will follow the chain of events leading her to fall into Elad’s web, including the moment she realizes she has been trapped and her feeble attempts to escape – until it’s too late. WRITER'S STATEMENT "The Parasite" is inspired by Michal Sela's case. She was a social worker who was leading a double life. Her murder shocked everyone around her. She had never told a soul about the abuse she was suffering in the hands of her husband, Eliran. As bad as it was, he had never raised a hand on her, and therefore she wasn’t aware of just how dangerous he is and didn’t recognize the signs that started from the beginning of their relationship. Having volunteered in the Michal Sela Forum, I had the privilege of getting to know her family from up close. In this process, I learned that emotional, financial and physical abuse usually have the same patterns and signs. Women from all across the country, of all races, religions and classes are paying a much too heavy price, and the spotlight needs to be shifted. In her manifest (titled “The Parasite”), Lili Ben-Ami explains this principle well by comparing the murdering husband to a parasite: “The parasite lacks means to sustain its own life, and feeds on the other, the stronger, which acts as a host. The parasite clings onto the powerful, compassionate host and turns her into its food, sucking his life force from her.” Lili, who is Michal’s sister and head of The Michal Sela Forum, will act as the series consultant. So, what brings a successful young woman, whose life’s work revolves around helping women, fall into a destructive relationship with an abusive man? And on the other hand, what tragic chain of events turns a man into a full-on narcissist and even a murderer? What happens behind closed doors, just before the murder takes place? Are all women in danger of being murdered and all men in danger of becoming murderers? "The Parasite" will allow viewers a glimpse of this subject from an angle less explored; through daily life, the destructive dynamic that repeats itself over and over again. There will be moments when this outcry will be hard to bear, but my hope is that it will shed light on the matter and do some justice to all those strong women who only wanted to be loved. ABOUT THE WRITER PRODUCER'S STATEMENT The project started as a character based true story-case study. As we progressed we understood that we are dealing with a behavioural pattern which appears in almost every violent relationship when a man tries to possess his woman partner. A repetitive step deal, where at the end, the woman either breaks out of the relationship or dies. I believe the story is universal, and happens in every country and society. The pattern stays the same. As such, I strongly believe in the relevance of this series worldwide, and I am looking forward to finding collaborators. • Mindi Ehrlich

Insignificant Insignificant Screenwriter: Mindi Ehrlich Producer: Efrat Dror , Herzliya Studios Language: Hebrew Format: Send PITCHDECK LOGLINE A legal drama television series which portrays how the ancient laws of the Halacha (the Jewish laws) constantly collide and clash with the modern Israeli everyday reality. This collusion will occur mainly through the eyes of Nechama (43), an ultra-orthodox and legal representative of women in Rabbinical courts, who feels transparent and powerless in her position. She will choose to hide behind a man, a secular lawyer, with the hope he will be able to sound her voice for her. But as things progress, Nechama will realize she is no longer willing to hide. She will get out from behind the scenes, and fight for a change. SYNOPSIS Nechama (43) is an ultra-Orthodox legal representative in the rabbinical court and a mother of nine children. She is married to Motke (45), a Torah scholar and head of a distinguished Yeshiva. Nechama belongs to a conservative community where the man is expected to study Torah, therefore the burden of providing a livelihood falls on the woman's shoulders. In order for Motke to follow this tradition, Nechama has studied to be able to represent clients in the rabbinical court and was certified as a “rabbinical litigator”, much like an attorney in civil court (She is allowed to represent clients only in the rabbinical court and not in an ordinary court). At first, the profession of rabbinical litigator (for those uncertified to practice law) was reserved only for men (yeshiva graduates). It was only in the early 90s that authorization was granted to train women as well. For the first time women were considered equal to men by the religious establishment, although they were excluded from giving testimony. Since legal representation is a masculine, extravert profession that is not mindful of the ultra-Orthodox woman whose essence centers on modesty, the profession was less adopted by the women of the ultra-Orthodox sector. But Nechama, who was determined to let her husband study Torah, decided to become a rabbinical litigator, primarily because it's what she knows best – to study and litigate. Only in recent years have a minority of ultra-Orthodox female litigators appeared in the rabbinical courts, to the dismay of the “Dayanim” (rabbinical judges) who were slowly forced to surrender to this trend. Nechama looks like a typical ultra-Orthodox woman. At the age of 18 she married the only man she ever met. Motke is water that runs deep, a conservative patriarch who rules his family and students in his quiet way. While he's busy studying Torah and heading the Yeshiva, Nechama crumbles under the burden of providing a livelihood. In the absence of a budget, she works from home. This upsets all the family members who are forced to remain in their rooms while Nechama meets clients in the living room and must maintain their privacy as well as her family's. Nechama is imprisoned in a conservative and chauvinistic world. Her chances of succeeding as a woman are close to none. But she has no alternative, this is her world and this is her family. At home, Motke is the king and Nechama isn't necessarily the queen. Being opinionated and assertive aren't sexy qualities for an ultra-Orthodox woman in a conservative community. Nechama has no choice but to supply the goods, to be a modest wife and do her husband's bidding. Deep down, Nechama knows all too well that she wasn't destined to be a homemaker; cooking and cleaning aren't her forté. She would much prefer writing statements of claims or delving into an article or innovative ruling – that is her Strength. Nechama is not the woman of valor expected of her. Though she tries her best to please her family, once she completes her boring chores, she escapes to her legal cases, and that – definitely excites her. Here she excels For all intents and purposes Nechama has the skills to become the most sought after rabbinical litigator in town. But skills are one thing, reality is another. In reality, Nechama must battle it out with chauvinistic Dayanim to whom her voice doesn’t count. This infuriates her, because it is not for lack of proficiency, but because she is a woman. Despite her vast knowledge and excellent skills, she loses cases and this frustrates her. She knows that she has what it takes to win cases but the gap between her professionalism and what happens in practice makes her great potential irrelevant. It was Nechama's extensive knowledge, sharp wit and outstanding skills in arguing and wining that first brought her to the profession. Yet she doesn’t stand a chance with these Dayanim . She is a woman who was raised from infancy to lower her eyes before men. She doesn't have the "chutzpah" or the daring required of a rabbinical litigator.
