- Benjamin Freidenberg and Ihab Jadallah
Territory X Screenwriters: Ihab Jadallah, Benjamin Freidenberg Producer: Ayelet Kait and Amir Harel , Lama Films Language: Hebrew Format: Send PITCHDECK LOGLINE A family drama about married LGBT Palestinians in East Jerusalem and their families, that focuses on Hussam, a gay, Muslim, Palestinian lawyer, a married father of two, who are all in the process of becoming naturalized Israeli citizens, decides along with his wife, to have the secret male lover he’s kept hidden from everyone, move in with them. SYNOPSIS The series takes place in the Beit Hanina neighborhood of East Jerusalem that borders Bethlehem to the south and Ramallah to the north. The neighborhood’s streets still aren’t considered Israeli territory. With large unpaved areas and public spaces, and unnumbered homes that don’t appear on the map, the Israeli bulldozers start entering the neighborhood and constructing buildings, erecting signs and opening schools that belong to the Israeli ministry of education. All of this takes place while families and homes are being evicted in order to make way for the new construction plan or having been bought out by Jewish settlers and right-wing organizations. The show focuses on a middle-class Palestinian family that’s at an important crossroads in its life – gaining their Israeli citizenship – when an unexpected drama occurs and catches them unprepared. The show’s main character - Hussam - a civil rights lawyer that represents stateless Palestinian clients, is experiencing the most profound personal crisis of his life. After years of hiding, he tells his wife about his relationship with Fuad, a younger man. Manal, a history school teacher at the Beit Hanina high school, isn’t surprised or distraught by his confession, she’s just concerned with how their extended family, neighbors and community might respond. She finds out that Fuad has been over to their house a few times and that the neighbors saw him, and that there’s a rumor going around that Manal and Fuad are having an affair. In order to refute the rumor, Manal has to act fast. Instead of getting divorced or demanding that Hussam break things off with Fuad, Manal and Hussam welcome him into their home and he moves into the small unit in their backyard, in order to keep their relationship and family intact and to prevent any further gossip. They hide Hussam and Fuad’s relationship and present him as one of Hussam’s clients they decided to provide shelter for as a humanitarian gesture. They enjoy the encouragement and support of their inner circles, but their children, Aadil and Hafza (an 11-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl) catch on to what’s really happening in their family right away. The boy defends his parents and Fuad, while the daughter rebels against their narrative and tries to expose their secret. The family finds out about couples and families that share the same lifestyle; that keep a secret from their surroundings, while one of the parents is either a homosexual man or a lesbian woman. Hussam and Fuad find themselves in the secret LGBT circles of Bethlehem and Ramallah, when their secret is revealed to a closed off group of married Palestinian Lesbians and homosexuals that are married to one another for show, or keep the third member of their relationship within the family. These aren’t young people in their 20s, but people with families in their 30s-50s that didn’t run away from home, or move to Tel Aviv or abroad. The identity turmoil they experience is just one part of a larger complex Palestinian drama that’s contains many voices; in the tension between Christians and Muslims, between nationalists and communists, between revolutionaries, activists and conservatists. The characters’ naturalization process includes a declaration of loyalty to the state of Israel and giving up one identity in favor of another, albeit a more promising and financially secure one. But the absurd political, religious, sexual, nationalistic, personal and collective identity confluence - that forces people to fit into a single fixed category, will manifest in this family drama in comical, absurd and touching scenes, that illuminate the family unit in a new, wild, unique and subversive light WRITER'S STATEMENT ABOUT THE WRITERS PRODUCER'S STATEMENT PRODUCER PROFILE PRODUCTION CONTACT DETAILS Back To Participants PARTICIPATION APPLICATION RULES & REGULATIONS PARTICIPANTS OBLIGATIONS PARTICIPATION REGULATION SERIES LAB PARTICIPANTS MENTORS PROFESSIONAL GUESTS JURY PARTICIPATION APPLICATION RULES & REGULATIONS FAQ SERIES LAB FILM LAB MENTORS JURY DECISION MAKERS SCOUTS AND PITCHING PARTICIPANTS & PROJECTS LAB FILMS PARTICIPATION APPLICATION PARTICIPANTS OBLIGATIONS RULES & REGULATIONS FILM FAQ FILM LAB HOME TEAM NEWS LABS 3RD EDITION SERIES CATALOGUE 3RD EDITION PARTICIPANTS AND PROJECTS JURY MENTORS TEAM

Add a Title Add a Title Send Send Eitan Mansuri Producers: , Hila Elena Royzenman The Plasticians Lab Edition 2 2023 PITCH LOGLINE An illegal plastic surgery clinic, binds the fate of a mother and daughter, who are dragged into running the business from their crumbling living room. As they rise as successful business-women, their harsh reality creeps back in, facing them with the realisation that their empowerment is a mere façade. SYNOPSIS An ambitious secretary, an immigrant from the USSR, wants to become a successful life coach. Unfortunately, she can't get out from under the burden of the symbiotic relationship with her mother, a surgeon from Moscow who has become a taxi driver since immigrating to Israel. In order to finally leave the house and jumpstart her career, she has to find a way for her mom to function without her. She decides to set up a makeshift surgical clinic at home, so her mother can regain the dignity and sense of purpose she lost. While she waits for the medical license to be approved, the underground clinic begins to grow. The daughter is tempted to give up on her own dreams and live forever alongside this happier and stronger version of her mother, the mother she always wanted. The two form a surprising camaraderie through their complicity in crime, and drag each other deeper into the underworld. WRITER'S STATEMENT I was born in St. Petersburg and grew up in an immigrant home in Israel, alongside two educated parents who managed to always take care of the family's financial security, but never found professional fulfilment. I am a daily witness to the dissonance between the successful professionals my parents once were, and the life of survival and compromise brought forth by immigration. The trauma of immigration naturally passed onto the next generation. The parent-child relationship was turned on its head, and the children often functioned as the responsible adults in the family. As someone who grew up this way, I have always had an impossible dream: to restore my parent’s dignity and see them strong and full of confidence. However, my parents and their friends chose to embrace life and live it to the fullest. They write plays for birthdays, record songs for each other, dance, drink and soothe their pain with a passion for life and love, trying above all else to forget the instability and uncertainty of life. The massive addiction to plastic surgery is in fact an attempt at controlling the uncontrollable, a human desire to look good, or simply be seen. In the unique clinic which our series creates, both the immigrant staff and their clients, are driven by the same human nature to survive. Plastic surgery has become even more popular and accessible in recent years. Still, it is a medical procedure, surgery, positioning the patients seeking treatment as 'ill,' not good-looking or young enough; consequently, the notion of 'healing' through a plastic surgery is very limited. In many cases, dealing with eternal appearance is caused by psychological problems that are neglected and even exacerbated. In this series, I hope to present the other side of the beauty industry's enticing brochures, and focusing on the mental motivations for seeking an external solution. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT In 1990, the dissolution of the Soviet Union sparked a significant wave of Russian immigration worldwide. Among these migrations, the influx of Jewish Russians to Israel stands as the nation's largest ever witnessed, with one million individuals making the journey. While many managed to integrate successfully, others faced challenges. "The Plasticians" delves into the narratives of those who struggled to integrate fully into society but nonetheless, never gave up on their joy of life, their culture and definitely not on their dreams. This series raises relevant, global questions about immigration, belonging, and the coexistence of cultures within a nation. It offers a fresh perspective on Russian immigrants who abandoned their previous lives, professions, and sometimes families in pursuit of a new home. Hila Royzenman introduced the project at the Series Mania writer's campus 2022, showcasing her promise as a young director with a distinct voice and deep understanding of these characters' worlds. The series is multilingual, featuring dialogue in Hebrew, Russian, and English, indicating its potential to transcend borders. The Vacation Dénes Nagy Producers Sára László, Olivier Dubois, Marcell Gerő, Jean-Laurent Csinidis Lab Edition: 12 , 2024 SCENE PITCH Production Campfilm, Hungary; Films De Force Majeure, France; Novak Prod, Belgium Country Hungary, France, Belgium SYNOPSIS A Hungarian farm worker in his 40s goes on an organized trip to Provence with his wife. It's the first time they've been abroad, and they speak no language other than their own. During the trip, they make friends with another Hungarian couple, who seem to be more experienced travelers than they are. While his wife is excited by this new acquaintance, he feels more and more lost. He observes his wife slowly drifting away from him, which triggers an inner voyage of self-discovery. DIRECTOR'S NOTE The basic premise of the film is that it will be working with an amateur cast: to build on the presence of these characters, to record their inner uncertainties. Another important element is the comedy which stems from the protagonists’ ignorance. Our hearts open to these people: they are lost characters who try to stand their ground, but in the meantime, attempt to cover up their clumsiness. What can we do with realities that are alien to us? What do we do with the foreignness of ourselves? ABOUT THE FILMMAKER Award-winning scriptwriter-director Dénes Nagy graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts of Budapest in 2009. His debut feature "Natural Light" had its world premiere at the 2021 Berlinale where it won the Silver Bear Award for Best Director as well as the European Film Awards Best Production Design Award. The family leads a fulfilling life until their world is flipped upside down during a trip to Japan where Saki passes away suddenly. After the tragedy, Saki’s parents consider it their duty to raise Genki in Japan - an inconceivable decision for Tom, who resolves to fight to remain the mother of her child. DIRECTOR'S NOTE Being married to a Japanese woman myself, the need to give life to this story originates from the anguish of what we could one day have to go through. Even though "Wagako" is different from our reality, the storyline grew from our own administrative issues and our suffering of not being recognized as a legal couple in Japan. Indeed, same sex marriage is not allowed in the country of the rising sun. My wife and I deeply wish to make our own family but how do we tread this path - knowing full well that we will not be able to ensure security to this unborn child. ABOUT THE FILMMAKER Coralie Watanabe Prosper graduated from the National Film School of Nice. Her final project, "Mathi(eu)", is a multi-award-winning short film screened around the world.
