  • Rotem Kapelinsky

The Subject Add a Title Add a Title Send Send Naomi Levari, Saar Yogev, Guy Hudes Producers: , Rotem Kapelinsky The Subject Lab Edition 2 2023 PITCH LOGLINE Seeking salvation, an ultra-Orthodox homosexual entrusts his fate to a contentious psychologist, becoming the centrepiece of an ethically dubious virtual reality conversion experiment. SYNOPSIS Nathan Sheinfeld, an ultra-Orthodox Jew from New York, deeply loves his family, his job, and God, but loathes himself. Seeking redemption following another clandestine homosexual encounter, he journeys to Jerusalem to find Josh Sokolovsky, a controversial therapist who once helped him with his perversion, but has since disappeared. Josh, who now utilizes innovative ""kosher"" VR sessions featuring female avatars to teach Yeshiva students about future marital intimacy, refuses to treat Nathan again. However, recognizing Nathan's profound distress, he proposes a temporary solution: Nathan can join his clinic as a female avatar, which Josh believes might offer him some solace. While Nathan finds some peace in his new role, Josh rekindles his lifelong mission to “cure” homosexuality and employs an ethically dubious conversion therapy on Nathan within the virtual realm, without his consent or knowledge. When Nathan uncovers that he has been unwittingly made a test subject, he chooses not to flee. Driven by a burning desire for ""rectification"", Nathan is even prepared to face death. WRITER'S STATEMENT ״The Subject״ occurs ״later today״ and captures my greatest fear- that we are marching toward a world where tools from the future will be used to impose values from a biblical past, and cloud the present with dystopian shades. In the sphere between man, technology, and religion, ״The Subject״ deals with redemption" as a seductive but dangerous concept, that is centered both on religious thought and secular enchantment with innovation. Nathan, the protagonist, is so determined to correct himself that he rejects a stable and loving life with Deborah his wife, and entrusts himself to Josh who offers him a religious, psychological, and technological solution, proving that under the promise of correction and redemption, these tools from such doctrines are not contradictory, but rather merge into a single and dangerous struggle. The "conversion therapy" Nathan undergoes not only raises questions about our ability to reshape a person but primarily whether we have the moral right to develop such tools. The plot unfolds through the perspectives of the three characters, capturing religious and patriarchal tension; Josh is the father, Deborah is the mother and Nathan is the torn son. Set in a fluid world where old and new, masculine and feminine, real and virtual converge, the series' visual style blends gaming and realistic drama to craft a layered aesthetic, ethical, and emotional landscape. Spanning science fiction, psychological thriller, and intimate drama, The Subject invites viewers to walk the fine line between redemption and destruction, offering a human solution that does not seek to change people or use powerful tools, but only the power of love and acceptance of people as they are. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT ״The Subject״ occurs ״later today״ and captures my greatest fear- that we are marching toward a world where tools from the future will be used to impose values from a biblical past, and cloud the present with dystopian shades. The Widow's Detective Add a Title Add a Title Send Send Eitan Mansuri Producers: , Boaz Frenkel The Widow's Detective Lab Edition 3 2024 PITCH LOGLINE An ultra-Orthodox PI from Brooklyn is hired by a young widow to find her missing brother-in-law to perform a "Halitza," a religious ceremony that frees her from the obligation to marry her late husband's brother, thus freeing her to remarry SYNOPSIS Simcha (40), An ultra-Orthodox PI from Brooklyn, is hired by a young widow to find her missing brother-in-law for a "Halitza” ceremony. The case takes a dark turn when he discovers his client is an impostor and that her operator was murdered. Now the prime suspect, Simcha embarks on a fateful journey to find the mysterious brother and clear his name. This leads him all the way to Hamburg's secular nightlife, where he finds himself embroiled in a deep corrupted inheritance battle within a large Hasidic court and uncovers a secret bigger than expected. WRITER'S STATEMENT The Widow’s Detective is a Jewish and cynical version of American film noir movies from the 1930s and 1940s and neo-noir films from the 1970s to the present day. The encounter of this genre with the mysterious, closed, crowded, and non-individualistic ultra-Orthodox enclave of Williamsburg creates a connection that produces an ironic gap filled with dark and mysterious tones. This world becomes both a haven and a prison for characters who navigate secrets and have clashing expectations. With high-contrast lighting in narrow alleys and dimly-lit yeshivas, the series explores faith and identity amid mystery. It's Shtisel meets Chinatown, probing the tension between modernity and tradition. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT When we encountered Boaz Frankel's previous works, it was clear to us that he had a unique vision and a deep understanding of the complexities within the worlds he portrays and we were very eager to work with him on this project. "The Widow's Detective" stands out by merging the intricacies of a Hasidic Jewish community with the timeless appeal of a film noir detective story. This fusion offers a fresh and distinctive perspective. Boaz’s film noir-inspired lens adds depth and intensity, promising a visually striking and emotionally compelling experience that we believe will captivate audiences worldwide. We are incredibly excited to bring this project to light and share it with the audience. Crossing the Line Add a Title Add a Title Send Send Osnat Saraga Producers: , Rita Borodiyanski Crossing the Line Lab Edition 3 2024 PITCH LOGLINE How low must one go in order to climb up, when planning for the future is considered a luxury? Street-smart Liz finds family and future at the most unexpected place - checkpoints on the West Bank-Israeli border. SYNOPSIS The story of Liz Angel (22), who starts working at the checkpoints – where only the truly desperate work. For her it’s a perfect job: her co-workers come from similar backgrounds as her, and the position includes free food, transportation and housing, in a small shared trailer which soon turns into her own little slice of heaven. Her genuine home keeps pulling her back in, and her parents’ piling debts demand. What starts out as a small scale smuggling from the West Bank into Israel, will soon blow out of proportion. WRITER'S STATEMENT Crossing The Line is inspired by my experience as a soldier inspecting at checkpoints. It offers a look at young people today, coming from impoverished backgrounds on both sides of the border, willing to do whatever it takes for a better life. They are risking their jobs, national security and loved ones’ safety. Considering others is a privilege to those busy surviving. It’s a story of survival on life’s sidelines. Bringing this world to the screen from a feminine POV is a mission to me. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT Rita’s story is based on her own, not simple life experience. Rita's POV is a unique feminine look that brings a new voice of young people who have under zero chances nowdays in Israel to make something of their lives. The story setting is placed brilliantly by Rita, at the checkpoints– an explosive point of emotions in the heart of the conflict of our region. Rita has won the right to tell this story. • Nayef Hammoud and Gal Rosenbluth

Non-Issue Add a Title Add a Title Send Send Efrat Dror Producers: Gal Rosenbluth , Nayef Hammoud Non-Issue Lab Edition 1 2022 PITCH LOGLINE Fed up with the judgements of others, a millennial Israeli-Palestinian couple escapes to Berlin in the hopes of starting over with a clean slate. But as they build their lives in their new city, they discover they can’t run from their identities. SYNOPSIS Non-Issue is a Palestinian-Israeli dramedy that starts with a one-night stand gone wrong on a beach in Haifa and ends in Berlin. The series follows NAOMI, 27, and ALA, 28, an Israeli-Jewish woman and an Arab with an Israeli passport, who both live in Israel and believe that, in 2022, their relationship is no big deal. But reality reminds them at every turn that it is. Their relationship is put to the test by gossipy friends, parents who forget their liberal values when it comes to their daughter, an ex-fiancé who is also a rising political star on the Israeli left, ecstasy-induced anxiety attacks in Ramallah, a stolen car in Hebron, and the “Morning After” pill. The journey strengthens their love but isolates them from the people closest to them. Finally, they realize that, if they wish to be a “normal couple,” they have no choice but to leave their country. But in Berlin, faced with the hardships of immigration and alienation, each of them clings to the one thing they are familiar with — their identity. This is when the politics of the Middle East and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict invade their love life and drive them apart. Ala befriends people from the Arab world, from countries he could never have gone to: Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia and others. He volunteers at an NGO for Syrian refugees, which is where he meets MAY, a Lebanese-German woman. He falls in love with her and with the Arab world. Meanwhile, Naomi finds her dream job at an Israeli art gallery in Berlin. Her work strengthens her Zionism, as she works at “marketing” Israel. Meanwhile, Germany is becoming less tolerant towards the waves of immigration. Naomi is safe because of her dual Israeli-Polish citizenship, but Ala loses his legal status. They are pushed farther apart. Their relationship finally comes to a head at a gala event at the Israeli gallery, in front of everyone present. Ala moves out of their apartment and gets in trouble with the police, which puts him at risk for deportation. Naomi suggests a deal: a fake wedding. Strictly business. Ala agrees. They get married at the Berlin City Hall, and break up in real life. But then, just before they say goodbye for the last time, their lawyer lets them know they have to keep living together, to keep up appearances for the immigration authorities. ; WRITER'S STATEMENT PRODUCER'S STATEMENT LOOKING FOR Back To Participants HOME SERIES LAB WHO'S WHO MENTORS PROFESSIONAL GUESTS JURY ADVISORY BOARD PARTICIPANTS PARTICIPATION APPLICATION RULES & REGULATIONS FAQ PARTICIPATION APPLICATION RULES & REGULATIONS PARTICIPANTS OBLIGATIONS PARTICIPATION REGULATION SERIES LAB PARTICIPANTS MENTORS PROFESSIONAL GUESTS JURY PARTICIPATION APPLICATION RULES & REGULATIONS FAQ SERIES LAB FILM LAB MENTORS JURY DECISION MAKERS SCOUTS AND PITCHING PARTICIPANTS & PROJECTS LAB FILMS PARTICIPATION APPLICATION PARTICIPANTS OBLIGATIONS RULES & REGULATIONS FILM FAQ FILM LAB HOME TEAM NEWS LABS

Not Your Fault Add a Title Add a Title Send Send Adi Bar Yossef Producers: Einat Weinbaum , Or Sinai Not Your Fault Lab Edition 1 2022 PITCH LOGLINE Dori, a volunteer at a help center for victims of sexual assault, has her world turned upside down when she receives an anonymous report about a rape that took place years ago. She suspects that Yonatan, her wonderful partner, and the father of her unborn child, might be the rapist in question. SYNOPSIS It seems that Dori (33) has it all. She just found out that she’s pregnant with her sweet and sensitive partner, Yonatan’s child. They have shared a life together for seven years, and they are about to purchase an apartment, in preparation for their expanding family. She has her own business – a successful vintage shop in Tel Aviv. But she spends most of her time and energy as a veteran volunteer at a help center for victims of sexual assault; this is the place where she feels the most satisfaction and meaning. One evening, while on a shift at the emergency hotline at the help center, Dori receives an anonymous call. The caller has just remembered repressed memories. She says she was drugged and raped at a music festival in the desert over a decade ago. The caller doesn’t remember what her attacker looked like, but she does remember the unique tattoo on his shoulder. She also remembers the smell of his aftershave, and the song that he played while he attacked her - the song that he went out of his way to tell her how much he loved. Dori trembles, she already knows all of this – the description of the rapist sounds horribly similar to her partner Yonatan (40). This is the same Yonatan that she is in love with, the music teacher, the former farm boy, the one who cares about the environment and animals, the man that she tied her life to, the man whose child she carries in her womb. Her Yonatan. What is she supposed to do now? To throw away all of those good years and future plans, just because of one suspicious phone call? Frightened Dori embarks on a journey, right underneath Yonatan’s nose, as she searches for clues in the case. Yonatan currently works as a music teacher at an elementary school, but he used to be a guitarist in a successful rock band from the 2000s called Primary Needs. It was precisely at the height of their success that the band unexpectedly broke up, and Yonatan decided to stay out of the spotlight. Under false pretenses, Dori meets with those who were close to Yonatan at that time, as she tries to gather information that will tip the scales, while simultaneously failing to lead a normal relationship with Yonatan. On his part, Yonatan doesn’t understand Dori’s distance and strange behavior. However, he is convinced by those around him that Dori is simply acting out due to the stress of the pregnancy and purchasing their first apartment, and “she’ll get over it”. And eventually Dori does feel immensely relieved when she discovers that the anonymous caller is Zohar (31), an emotionally unstable woman who is hospitalized in a psychiatric ward, and is known to “harass” the help center’s hotline. Suddenly Zohar’s story sounds dubious and made-up, and Dori decides to let go of her suspicions and move on with her life. But soon after, the case comes back to haunt her. When Zohar is released from the psychiatric ward, she decides to file a complaint about the rape incident, and Dori is asked by the help center to accompany Zohar to the police. Dori shows up with the intention of neutralizing the threat that Zohar poses to her life, and tries to dissuade her from filing the complaint, but she is surprised to find out that Zohar is a wise and determined woman, far from the crazy girl she imagined her to be. Zohar reveals additional details that clearly point towards Yonatan, and Dori can’t continue to deny it any longer. Zohar’s story wounds her heart, and she bravely stands alongside her. Dori and Zohar get closer and closer, developing a special bond, an almost symbiotic relationship that transcends all boundaries. During their joint investigation, they discover that Zohar’s rape is only a drop in the ocean; There was not one single rape that happened at that festival, but rather a broad manipulative, wide range of sexual assaults. They are pursuing a sophisticated, serial rapist, that none of the victims are able to identify. Could it be Yonatan? The quest for truth causes Dori’s life to turn upside down. She suffers from an inflammatory skin disease that makes her miserable and restricts her work, she moves further and further away from Yonatan, she lies to her colleagues at the help center, and she is forced to confront the unresolved abuse story from her childhood. As the investigation continues, it turns out that Yonatan is in fact not the rapist; it was Chaim (55), the lead singer of Primary Needs. Dori realizes that although Yonatan did not play an active role, he was a silent witness, and even cooperated with Chaim’s horrific actions, and kept this dark secret for years. The “gray” area in which Yonatan functioned does not make things easier for Dori. Now she is faced with an even more complex question: Is it possible to forgive someone who witnessed acts of abused but did not commit them himself? Yonatan, ashamed of his past, is determined to do everything he can to atone for his sins and receive his punishment. Meanwhile, the women at the help center, the community to which Dori has belonged to for years, criticize and boycott her over her relationship with a man who assisted in a chain of sexual assaults. Dori grapples with the question – should she stand by the man she loves, who wishes and strives for atonement? Or should she stand with the victims for whom she volunteers and fought for all her life, who are in some way also part of her identity? All the while, a small baby grows inside her, and the idea of giving birth to Yonatan’s son is becoming more and more oppressive. “Not Your Fault” is a moving, ironic, and challenging drama series that examines the broad and elusive spectrum of consent, and offers an original perspective on the harm that is caused by sexual assault even years after it has occurred, not only for the victim – but for the perpetrator and their surroundings as well. What happens when the sexually abused individual, the one that seems far away, somewhere in the news, enters your home? And what if the rapist is not an evil man who traps women in a dark alley, but rather is someone like us, who shares their life with us? And what about the identity of the woman who dedicates her life to the victims, when the victim endangers her relationship and her future? During the eight episodes of this series, Dori is faced with all of these questions, all the while fearing that she herself will turn in a silent witness to the crime before her. She dreams of becoming a successful adman at the company run by her father. SYNOPSIS Michal (19), a young girl, ultra-orthodox, unmarried, dreams of breaking free from societal norms to become an adman in her father's advertising agency. Despite her responsible nature and comedic flair, she shoulders the burden of running her home for her mother, pregnant for the ninth time, and an absent father engrossed in his ad campaigns. To pursue her dream, Michal contemplates an arranged marriage, fearing the alternative of raising her own children. She privately arranges a match with Yanki, a Yeshiva student, leading to a ""dating-less"" deal. Meanwhile, she forms a tender connection with Naomi, the daughter of the agency's cleaning lady. As Michal navigates potential husbands, her relationship with Naomi blossoms. This forbidden love threatens Michal's reputation, job, and family. Amidst the challenges, Michal rises as a brilliant copywriter, facing the clash between her orthodox upbringing and the feminist identity she develops. Balancing her father and grandfather's perspectives, Michal confronts the patriarchal norms of the ultra-orthodox advertising world. Her journey transforms her into a strong, cunning professional, challenging societal norms. In the pursuit of her dream, Michal faces a dilemma between traditional marriage and a passionate love story with Naomi. Each choice entails heartbreaking sacrifices. Ultimately, Michal emerges as a heroine who finds herself, makes her own choices, and takes decisions that are entirely her own, even if they come with pain. WRITER'S STATEMENT The Ultra-Orthodox world is highly conservative, making it challenging for women like me. As the eldest with seven siblings, I took on the responsibility of essentially raising them. Despite dreaming of becoming a filmmaker, such aspirations are forbidden in my community. The expected path involves finishing school, getting married, having numerous children, and only then, perhaps, dreaming of a career. I followed the prescribed path dutifully, adhering to societal norms. However, I chose not to have children. Determined to pursue my passion for filmmaking, I made the unconventional decision to divorce my husband. This marked a bold step towards realizing my dreams in a world where such choices are often met with resistance. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT "The Sterns" gives us a glimpse to the Jewish Ultra- Orthodox world, which is usually kept behind closed doors. The creator, who is an up-and-coming Orthodox writer and director brilliantly manages to tackle the burning and unspoken issues of feminism within her closed community, through an area of a PR advertising company. These issues are universally relevant and appeal to a wide range of viewers.
