WRITER'S STATEMENT From the very first moment I read the book, I felt a deep connection—this was a story I had to turn into a television series and share with a wide audience, both in Israel and around the world. The character of Kimerling - an Orthodox Jewish detective in the closed world of Mea Shearim, an insular ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem - immediately captivated me. He’s a stranger in the neighborhood, but also a stranger to himself. His journey to solve mysteries is, at its core, a journey of self-discovery. The series blends suspense, sharp Jewish humor, emotional longing, and a combination of a detective story and a love story. But Kimerling is not just about the character—it's also about the world he inhabits. Jerusalem, as portrayed in this series, will be captured in a noir-inspired visual style we've never seen before: its winter light, narrow alleys, reflections in puddles, warm hidden synagogues, and the colorful figures that fill the screen. Every detail turns the city into a living character, the very soul of the series. This is a romantic comedy series about liberation from the conditioning of body image. Our heroine, Bat-El, who frees herself from the dictates of body image, realizes that now it is also the time to free herself from another form of restricting conditioning- marriage, weddings, and the prescriptions of the "right life". The wrestling group is composed of four plus-size women -intelligent, humorous, sexy, and groundbreaking-just as women in the past broke into sports once reserved for men, such as soccer, basketball, boxing, freestyle wrestling, pole vaulting, weightlifting, ice hockey, and more. This time, it is sumo’s turn. The artistic intention is to combine sharp, bold humor with exposed emotion, exposed skin. The dynamic between Bat-El and Maya moves between athletic rivalry and romantic attraction, and between a wounded past and a surprising present - along a tonal axis that shifts from funny, to painful, to moving. Together with Guy Nattiv, Tadmor also co-wrote and directed Magic Men (2014) and Strangers (2007), screened at Sundance. Sharon Maymon is a writer and director. He co-wrote the Academy Award (Oscar) winning short film Skin (2019). Maymon co-wrote and directed the TV series The Worst Best Thing (Keshet 12) Together with Tal Granit. Moving to the suburbs symbolizes the loss of desire or any aspiration for change, and as her career has also hit a turning point, tension rises in her married life with Adam. Rona is an archeologist on Sabbatical. She's "stuck" in the building most of the time, writing research and avoiding contact with others. Then she meets Vered, her neighbor from across the hall, and the two women soon become close. Vered intrigues Rona, exposing her to another side of life in the building. Rona gets a glimpse of the bubbling underworld in the new place, but nothing prepares her for the moment when Vered's husband Stephan seduces her into passionate sex on the kitchen island while her kids are next door. Rona is reawakened to a new dawn of sexual desire, but only when it happens again, this time with another neighbor's husband, does Rona realize that this is no coincidence, but a pattern. A drama that holds a dark humoristic tone, ISLAND is a cinematic attempt to decode the existential time bomb that hides inside the bourgeois relationship's belly. Rona's long-hibernating libido is awakened at the most unaccepted of all places, causing her to doubt everything – as happens to many women after long years spent in relationships and caring for children. But perhaps the rocking of her foundations and the loss of control will allow her to succumb to the dark side of her passion for once, to accept herself as she is and to demand what she needs from the primary sexual and romantic relationship in her life. When reality and fantasy come together, Rona musters the courage in her relationship with Adam, allowing herself to let him in and to deepen the level of dialogue. This is when the film opens to Adam's point of view and becomes a story of two, exploring alternative communication through sex and fantasies. Using the dramatic scenery of dense buildings, I attempt to create a complex and moving cinematic expression. In my film the building becomes a live entity, with a weird undertone, an uncanny object with the power to swallow the characters. I aim for a wry humoristic tone, arising from the situations and the juxtaposing of scenes. The low green suburban landscapes in which I grew up are continuously being eradicated and replaced by the residential complexes that are Israel in 2021. Part child, part married woman and a mother, I reflect upon family life, as I insist on deciphering the code to a relationship that can contain complexity, contradictions, and risks. ABOUT THE FILMMAKER Yotam Knispel is an Israeli-Polish filmmaker and lecturer. His short films "Love Has Nothing To Do With It" and "Girl With a Fork in a World of Soup" were nominated for Israeli Academy Awards and won multiple awards. He wrote the documentary-animated feature "Kafka's Last Trial" and "Now More Than Ever", co-produced by American comedian Amy Schumer. His other shorts: "Bambina", "Drop", "Fuck Buddies". He won filmmaking grants and residencies in Europe and the USA. "Don't Forget Flora" is his first feature film. PRODUCER Harel Ben Melech Harel Ben Melech is a producer and founder of Tiara Films, a production company working across fiction, documentary, commercials, and music videos. SYNOPSIS In the strict Hasidic community of Gur, Rudy, a bridal counselor, instructs brides about the laws and rituals of ritual purity and the mitzvah of procreation, all while grappling with her own and her husband's infertility. In an effort to accumulate mitzvahs that might aid her in conceiving, she takes on the new "Yeshuos Hotline" – a helpline designed to strengthen women's faith. However, after an anonymous phone call to the hotline, Rudy finds herself listening and advising women in the community on issues of sexuality and relationships. All of this happens under the radar of her stern and revered mother-in-law, Rebbetzin Hinda. Through our exploration and collaboration, Rudy has emerged - the embodiment of our shared experiences and memories, through her we delve deep into the intricate concept of womanhood: female sexuality, femininity, hidden desires, female solidarity, and self-discovery. Our protagonist will have to choose between what is expected of her - societal norms, community responsibility, and her status - against the awakening of her inner desires. Our series explores sexuality, particularly from the perspective of those for whom it is traditionally denied or suppressed. The series is set within the unique community of the Gur Hasidic sect, where a distinct and rigid separation exists between men and women. Relationships within this community are minimized to the bare minimum, and sexual relations are referred to as ""The Mitzvah,"" while the vagina is euphemistically called ""That Place” or “That Hole”. We also aim to shed light on the practice of ""bridal instruction"" and its unwavering rules that demand the erasure of the female body and the suppression of female pleasure. Countless women adhere to these rules daily, leading to a detachment from their own bodies and natural desires, all in the name of Halakha laws that are said to protect them. We want to swing open the gates of the Haredi world and venture in via personal experience. As creators who are still connected to this world, our gaze is multi-dimensional and nuanced, presenting the beauty alongside the ugliness through both loving and critical eyes. The series will intimately capture the intricate details known solely to those who have lived through them, such as the bloodstained underwear in the husband's pocket on the way to the rabbi for purity rulings; the KY jelly that every woman must apply before intimate relations; the headaches caused by the pins that secure the wig; the pain during the performance of “The Mitzvah”; and the revelation of a first orgasm without prior knowledge of its existence. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT Our relationship with Orit began when we worked on her debut film, Cinema Sabaya, which was Israel's official Oscars Entry. We immediately knew we had encountered an incredibly talented director and writer who creates unique worlds and tells compelling stories that deeply touch the hearts of others. Orit collaborates for the writing with Adi, the director of a theater group called "Out For Change", a non-profit that supports young people leaving the religious Haredi world. Bessy and Miri, who participate in this group, have chosen to forge their paths outside the Haredi world. Adi has embarked on a collective writing journey alongside Bessy and Miri, which led to the early development of 'That Hole.' The series is set within the unique community of the Gur Hasidic sect, where a distinct and rigid separation exists between men and women. This radicalized framework allows us to explore the contrasting dynamics between absolute adherence and skepticism and examine their impact on personal growth and development.
