Initially a routine task, it gradually becomes a journey of self-discovery, confronting distant traumas while finding a new path. DIRECTOR'S NOTE This movie explores the alienation between three family members who have forgotten how to love and share their feelings. Asen is part of a lost generation stuck somewhere in the transition between Communism and Democracy. Asen’s father Kaloyan, is a man of dignity and long forgotten values. Somewhere between the conflict between Asen and Kaloyan, Koko lies hidden. He’s a boy on the verge of manhood, desperately searching for a role model in his life. I am searching for an answer to the question are we, as society, capable of producing persons of honour anymore? I know that the movie is not going to give a definitive answer but it can lead us searching for it. The most important inspiration for this project was the life of my grandfather. He was a talented poet, but because he was against the communist regime, he wasn’t allowed to publish any books until the fall of the communism. He once told me: “They can always take you everything you have, but no one can take your dignity.” When I heard this sentence, I was so young that I didn’t pay much attention to it. Nowadays I think a lot about this subject and I based the foundation of my movie around it. The rhythm of the movie will be closer to an observation that will urge the audience to search for a self-knowledgeable experience. The lack of any wind even in the widest environments will serve as a metaphor for the lost path that our civilisation is heading on. The camera movement will help me shape this narrative as poetic as possible. In order to achieve this, I will use mainly long static shots. I am also planning to use old anamorphic lenses that will add another layer of timelessness to the movie. But before she learns how to survive mother nature, she’ll first have to survive her own mother. SYNOPSIS Pregnant Devorah (35) is distressed about losing herself and ending up like her needy mother after birth. Instead of “falling down the stairs”, she signs up for a two-month wilderness survival course on an ecological farm in the Israeli desert. Just as she eases into communal life, Devorah’s mother Deedee (60) joins the course, ruining her plans. When Devorah goes into labor before the course is over, she accepts that to live is to take a risk, and that ending up like her mother isn’t so bad. WRITER'S STATEMENT When ISIS was a thing, I Marie Kondo-ed my belongings and joined an ecological farm. Over the years I have exchanged some anxieties for others, though some have steadfastly remained: Holocaust II and climate change. Despite that, I had a child; I'm optimistic- the world can become a better place. But the experience of childbirth brought on the new fear of turning into my parents. And this, in a way, is the most challenging fear; no composting or forged papers will save me. This series is based on my experiences from the farm and my impossible yearning to change my destiny and be my own person. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT Aleeza is one of the most talented and promising screenwriters and directors in Israel. Our mutual success with her first series, "Chanshi", which was the first Israeli series shown at Sundance festival, encouraged us to try harder. I believe that "Big Crater" has a huge potential and is Aleeza's big next step: making a name for herself in her native America. Neill‘s classic children‘s book The Green Cloud as well as Bernd Sahling‘s German Film Award-winning feature film The Duds. She developed and script edited series such as Fauda (seasons 2, 3 and 4), Pillars of Smoke and others. After initially studying history, political science and ethnology at the University of Innsbruck, he obtained a law degree at the University of Vienna. At the end of 1999, Roland Teichmann started to work at the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber as a lawyer in the Industry Department. In 2001, he went on to become general manager of the Association of the Audiovisual and Film Industry, a body representing the interests of the Austrian film and music industry at the Federal Economic Chamber. Later on he was appointed CEO of the Austrian Film Institute.
