WRITER'S STATEMENT I grew up in a border town in northern Israel, the youngest of seven in a complex family. I served five years as a detective before moving into documentary filmmaking. Today, I work as a documentary researcher and director at Keshet 12 and teach civics and motivation to lifers. The prison, the border town, the characters in Shtukit, these are places and people I know. Bat-Or, like me, wants a new life and a new family, but the past doesn't let go. Shtukit is an edgy dark comedy filled with human warmth. The humor and crime emerge naturally from who these characters are: ex-cons, hustlers, religious seekers living messy, complicated lives. The language is raw, the stakes are real. Visually, the series is realistic, unglamorous, unforgiving. War-worn exhaustion, prison grit, grandma's house with peeling paint. A border town, a prison, an old house, settings that create a stark contrast between what the characters dream of and the gritty reality they're trapped in. ABOUT THE WRITER Meirav Hadas Hadad was born and raised in a small town on the Lebanese border, in a family of addicts. She teaches in a prison and works in the documentary department at Keshet 12, Israel's leading broadcast network. In 2019, she wrote and directed The Curse of Victor, a documentary that aired on cable. Shtukit is drawn from the real people and events that shaped her life. As they rise as successful business-women, their harsh reality creeps back in, facing them with the realisation that their empowerment is a mere façade. SYNOPSIS An ambitious secretary, an immigrant from the USSR, wants to become a successful life coach. Unfortunately, she can't get out from under the burden of the symbiotic relationship with her mother, a surgeon from Moscow who has become a taxi driver since immigrating to Israel. In order to finally leave the house and jumpstart her career, she has to find a way for her mom to function without her. She decides to set up a makeshift surgical clinic at home, so her mother can regain the dignity and sense of purpose she lost. While she waits for the medical license to be approved, the underground clinic begins to grow. The daughter is tempted to give up on her own dreams and live forever alongside this happier and stronger version of her mother, the mother she always wanted. The two form a surprising camaraderie through their complicity in crime, and drag each other deeper into the underworld. WRITER'S STATEMENT I was born in St. Petersburg and grew up in an immigrant home in Israel, alongside two educated parents who managed to always take care of the family's financial security, but never found professional fulfilment. I am a daily witness to the dissonance between the successful professionals my parents once were, and the life of survival and compromise brought forth by immigration. The trauma of immigration naturally passed onto the next generation. The parent-child relationship was turned on its head, and the children often functioned as the responsible adults in the family. As someone who grew up this way, I have always had an impossible dream: to restore my parent’s dignity and see them strong and full of confidence. However, my parents and their friends chose to embrace life and live it to the fullest. They write plays for birthdays, record songs for each other, dance, drink and soothe their pain with a passion for life and love, trying above all else to forget the instability and uncertainty of life. The massive addiction to plastic surgery is in fact an attempt at controlling the uncontrollable, a human desire to look good, or simply be seen. In the unique clinic which our series creates, both the immigrant staff and their clients, are driven by the same human nature to survive. Plastic surgery has become even more popular and accessible in recent years. Still, it is a medical procedure, surgery, positioning the patients seeking treatment as 'ill,' not good-looking or young enough; consequently, the notion of 'healing' through a plastic surgery is very limited. In many cases, dealing with eternal appearance is caused by psychological problems that are neglected and even exacerbated. In this series, I hope to present the other side of the beauty industry's enticing brochures, and focusing on the mental motivations for seeking an external solution. ABOUT THE WRITER PRODUCER'S STATEMENT In 1990, the dissolution of the Soviet Union sparked a significant wave of Russian immigration worldwide. Among these migrations, the influx of Jewish Russians to Israel stands as the nation's largest ever witnessed, with one million individuals making the journey. While many managed to integrate successfully, others faced challenges. "The Plasticians" delves into the narratives of those who struggled to integrate fully into society but nonetheless, never gave up on their joy of life, their culture and definitely not on their dreams. This series raises relevant, global questions about immigration, belonging, and the coexistence of cultures within a nation. It offers a fresh perspective on Russian immigrants who abandoned their previous lives, professions, and sometimes families in pursuit of a new home. Hila Royzenman introduced the project at the Series Mania writer's campus 2022, showcasing her promise as a young director with a distinct voice and deep understanding of these characters' worlds. His haunting stories of Ilse Koch, the "Witch of Buchenwald," and her grim legacy human-skin artworks stayed with me. Years later, I met Alexa, a German volunteer, and we fell in love. Visiting her family in Bavaria, I sensed the lingering shadows of history—hidden relics and unspoken guilt. One day, I accidentally entered the wrong room and found Nazi memorabilia and photos of her high-ranking SS grandfather. These experiences inspired me to create "The Lampshade," a Berlin-based detective series where history's dark echoes haunt the present. SYNOPSIS One day, a mysterious, violent break-in unsettles a closed, tight-knit Orthodox Jewish neighborhood governed by strict religious codes and silence. The Rabbi rules: “No police.” He calls in Kimerling (37) and gives him the case. Everyone assumes it was a burglary gone wrong, but Kimerling senses something far bigger is at work. A beloved rabbi dies from a mysterious snakebite, a key witness vanishes, the victim remembers nothing, and the community closes ranks — until a little girl breaks the code of silence with a sketch of the suspect. As Kimerling and his assistant, Meshulam (a journalist), dig deeper, they uncover a ruthless, tightly organized gang that exploits the internal rules of the Orthodox Jewish community, ruling it through fear, obedience, and violence. At the same time, an unexpected love story with Frumi (31), a mikvah attendant, cracks Kimerling’s emotional armor, exposing his vulnerability within a world that leaves little room for intimacy. WRITER'S STATEMENT From the very first moment I read the book, I felt a deep connection—this was a story I had to turn into a television series and share with a wide audience, both in Israel and around the world. The character of Kimerling - an Orthodox Jewish detective in the closed world of Mea Shearim, an insular ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem - immediately captivated me. He’s a stranger in the neighborhood, but also a stranger to himself. His journey to solve mysteries is, at its core, a journey of self-discovery. The series blends suspense, sharp Jewish humor, emotional longing, and a combination of a detective story and a love story. But Kimerling is not just about the character—it's also about the world he inhabits. Jerusalem, as portrayed in this series, will be captured in a noir-inspired visual style we've never seen before: its winter light, narrow alleys, reflections in puddles, warm hidden synagogues, and the colorful figures that fill the screen. Every detail turns the city into a living character, the very soul of the series. Ziv Berkovich, my incredible DOP (who shot for Natalie Portman, Netflix, and more) will join me in bringing this vision to life. While the story is indeed a detective mystery, it is equally an intimate journey in search of truth, justice, meaning, and love. Kimerling (Jewish-American) is profoundly local and strikingly universal, touching on the questions we all ask ourselves: Where do I belong? And how far will I go for the truth? We officially acquired the rights to adapt the novel for television. I want to turn Kimerling into a successful series, because I believe deeply in its cinematic and emotional power, and because I truly feel it can—and should—resonate with audiences both in Israel and around the world, especially in these complex times. ABOUT THE WRITER Sharon Benjamin Bar Ziv is an award-winning writer and director who started his screenwriting career with writing for the hit comedy TV series Shemesh and Platfus. His debut feature, Room 514 (2012), was selected for Cannes, won the prize for Best New Narrative Director at the Tribeca Film Festival, and screened in over 35 international festivals. His second feature, Good Morning Son (2019), premiered at the Haifa International Film Festival, was distributed in the US and Europe, and won the German Film Association award. In 2024, Sharon completed Wild Urge, his first English-language feature. The film’s World Premiere was held in Sofia. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT The series is built on a clear, recognizable high concept: a proven fusion between the classic mystery engine of Agatha Christie and the emotional, community-driven world of Shtisel — a combination that significantly reduces creative uncertainty, clearly defines its target audience, and substantially increases its commercial potential. The project is based on a bestselling existing IP: a novel by Asher Kravitz, an author whose other book has already been adapted into a Hollywood feature film. This provides strong brand equity, lowers risk, and strengthens market confidence. The series aligns with a broad international trend, supported by research, showing growing interest in distinctive Jewish content across both the United States and Europe. It offers a fresh, intelligent, and entertaining window into a closed community that has rarely been portrayed through a contemporary detective-comedy lens. Throughout my career, I have led numerous international collaborations with European and global producers and broadcasters, and Kimmerling was developed from the outset with international co-productions and global markets in mind. The show’s concentrated, insular setting enables relatively low production costs while delivering a strong identity, an intelligent entertainment tone, and high return-on-investment potential. We are seeking international partners for original, accessible, one-of-a-kind content — driven by soul, humor, and a mystery that can travel across borders. PRODUCER PROFILE Mark Rozenbaum is an Israeli film producer, and one of the most influential figures in Israeli cinema. Born in Poland in 1952, he immigrated to Israel in 1968 and studied film in the inaugural class of Tel Aviv University’s Film Department. In 1988, Rozenbaum founded Transfax Productions, through which he has produced over 70 feature films, shaping the modern Israeli cinematic canon. Five of his films won the Ophir Award for Best Film, Israel’s highest cinematic honor. Rosenbaum also served as Chairman of the Israeli Producers Association, leading the fight for original television productions, and later as Chairman of the Israeli Film Academy. In 2001, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival. In recent years, he has continued to create and act, earning an Ophir nomination for his role in The Death of Cinema and My Father Too (2025). Congratulations to Hajni Kis with "Ich Bin Marika" and Jerry Carlsson with ״Burnings״. "Ich Bin Marika" tells the story of Marika, a cashier in a Budapest supermarket. One day, her long-lost love, Jani re-appears in her life. He takes on a highway construction job in Germany, but causes a mass accident and is imprisoned. Marika decides to do what she can to get him out. In order to pay a lawyer, she goes to work for an elderly couple in Germany. "Burnings" tells the story of a lonely teenager who tries to hide his attraction towards other guys, but when he finds a portal in the basement that can make him change his appearance, a whole new world opens up that makes him question who he wants to be.
