WRITER'S STATEMENT From the very first moment I read the book, I felt a deep connection—this was a story I had to turn into a television series and share with a wide audience, both in Israel and around the world. The character of Kimerling - an Orthodox Jewish detective in the closed world of Mea Shearim, an insular ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem - immediately captivated me. He’s a stranger in the neighborhood, but also a stranger to himself. His journey to solve mysteries is, at its core, a journey of self-discovery. The series blends suspense, sharp Jewish humor, emotional longing, and a combination of a detective story and a love story. But Kimerling is not just about the character—it's also about the world he inhabits. Jerusalem, as portrayed in this series, will be captured in a noir-inspired visual style we've never seen before: its winter light, narrow alleys, reflections in puddles, warm hidden synagogues, and the colorful figures that fill the screen. Every detail turns the city into a living character, the very soul of the series. DIRECTOR'S NOTE Director’s Note GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS is set in a conservative Hindu school much like my school where we started each day with a pledge to “preserve our ageless Indian culture and conform to the way of life prescribed by it.” As I sprouted breasts, I understood that ‘Indian culture’ was the reason my skirt had to be long and my behavior demure. We were being taught to be ashamed of our bodies and sexuality while male sexuality was allowed to express itself, often in aggression towards us. Meanwhile, real female bodies and female desire were also erased from our screens. Breasts and butts were hypersexualized as women gyrated for the male gaze. But vaginas, menstruation, pubic hair, etc. were absent or treated with embarrassment and revulsion. The effect of this erasure is to cast our bodies as something shameful. It teaches us to be compliant and afraid of our body, sexuality and voice. Despite this, all around me I saw fierce, funny women who subverted social and moral codes. In GIRLS I wanted to write about these women who populated my life but not my screens. In GIRLS, Mira and her mother Anila are sexual, embodied beings with secretions and desires. Mira examines her vagina in a mirror, masturbates by rubbing up against a teddy bear and orchestrates her first sexual encounter. Anila shuns the self-sacrificing, asexual roles mothers are relegated to. She envies her daughter’s figure and boyfriend and pursues her desires with fervor. But even though GIRLS is a close observation of gender roles, sexuality, and patriarchy, it makes no thesis statement. The women in this film are not essentialized by their identities as Indian women, nor are they stand-ins for entire communities whose stories enlighten us about a social issue. I want Mira and Anila to represent only their singular selves as they experience love, disillusionment and envy. Because this is how their stories will also be universal—a luxury mostly reserved for characters from dominant cultures. In a government-built temporary caravan site for immigrants from the Soviet Union and Ethiopia, Roma (13) is trying to find his place in the Israeli society. At the local pool, a few of Roma's classmates discover that he has not been circumcised and humiliate him. Roma is desperate. He takes a knife and tries to circumcise himself. He is taken to the hospital to be circumcised properly. There, he is offered to change his name to an Israeli one - "Rami". Just before the dismantling of the caravans, Roma celebrates his bar mitzvah at the site. The ceremony is over and the dancing begins. Roma dances. His face is sealed, without a smile or an expression. DIRECTOR'S NOTE After we immigrated to Israel and were housed in a caravan site, my biggest secret was my late circumcision. I was different and was ashamed of it. I remember the hospital, I remember the tension before the circumcision surgery, and the slow and painful recovery. A swift wave of a sharp knife, a piece of skin less and I could look up and be proud of my Judaism again. It's a story about the complexity of immigration and the price you have to pay. The loss of an old identity in order to create a new one. Sometimes at any cost. LOG LINE 1993. SYNOPSIS Yotam is obsessed with thoughts of suicide, but years of therapy have convinced him that he’s not in real danger – until his therapist goes and kills himself. Terrified he’ll suffer the same fate, Yotam teams up with three other orphaned patients to prove their shrink was actually murdered. As their bumbling investigation begins to bear fruit, the danger escalates, leaving the group exposed and vulnerable – with only each other to lean on. WRITER'S STATEMENT My therapist cancels a session for health reasons, and so begets a crisis: what happens when he dies? No Hallmark card for that. I imagine furtively seeking out other clients at the funeral. Who but they would understand my loss? These are the dramatic seeds for “I’m Afraid That’s Our Time,” planted with my writing partner Nitai in the well-tilled soil of murder-mystery, watered with comedic irony and existential dread, growing now, we hope, into a story about love, death, friendship - and becoming the humans we want to be.
