She dreams of a perfect Bat Mitzvah (12 year old traditional birthday) that will finally make her popular. But when war breaks out, her father loses his job and her mother is called to reserve duty, her dream falls apart. Everything changes when her father finds work at an evacuee hotel, where Mazal sees a chance to reinvent herself and pretends to be an evacuee, earning her the first real friends of her life. But the better the lie works, the harder it becomes to escape. DIRECTOR'S NOTE I grew up in Israel, through periods of wars and conflicts. Looking back, what stays with me is how fear existed alongside everything else: worrying about whether I belonged, whether I had friends, whether a boy in my class liked me. Even when frightening things were happening around me, the everyday struggles of growing up could feel just as urgent. That contradiction is at the heart of "Mazal". Also, I never had a Bat Mitzvah myself. Maybe this is my chance. ABOUT THE FILMMAKER Helli Hardy is a screenwriter, director and producer. Graduate with honors of the Steve Tisch School of Film & Television at Tel-Aviv University. He has been working as a dramaturg and script consultant since 1995. As a freelance dramaturg, he supervised, among others, the film adaptation of A.S. Neill‘s classic children‘s book The Green Cloud as well as Bernd Sahling‘s German Film Award-winning feature film The Duds. Thomas Hailer Germany Sari Azoulay Turgeman is a director, screenwriter and script doctor, born in Cannes, France. Her first feature film “Wait For Me״ had its world premiere in competition 1-2, at the 2022 Warsaw Film Festival. It won the Best International Film prize at the Colluseum International Film Festival, and at the Film Festival One Country One Film. In 2008, she founded her own company for script consulting services (Scriptlight.com) and developed her own screenwriting method, which she teaches in professional workshops and masterclasses. Sari works as an artistic consultant for the Israeli Film Funds and as a mentor in workshops worldwide. She developed, script edited and screen wrote series such as Fauda (seasons 2, 3 4, 5) . She script edited the films “The Cousin” and “The Testimony”, which both took part in the Venice film festival and more. Lately she began work on her next feature film. The Sam Spiegel International Film Lab supports talents from all over the world through script editing, pitch training, inspirational and networking activities. Since its launch in 2011, The Sam Spiegel International Film Lab has been a leading force in the development of groundbreaking feature films by some of the world’s most promising talents. Each year the Lab selects 12 international writers/directors who are at advanced stages of writing their first/second narrative feature film. The participants are invited to Jerusalem for one working session, an additional session via zoom, and a concluding session taking place in an international industry event, over a seven-to-eight-month period. The selected projects undergo an in-depth process with one of our acclaimed script editors. At the last session they present to an audience (after a short pitch training, courtesy of the Shuster Polakoff Foundation) of jury members and decision makers, highly esteemed film professionals, at a celebratory professional event. The jury awards production prizes totaling $50,000- $70,000, generously donated by the Beracha Foundation. The Lab reserves the right to change the amount of the prizes. The Sam Spiegel International Film Lab supports bold storytellers, who look deeply into the human experience in search for their unique truth. The projects speak for themselves. ABOUT THE FILM LAB The Sam Spiegel International Film Lab supplies filmmakers with creative oxygen - time, mentorship, and deadlines. It consists of three main sessions: OUR METHOD SESSION 1 SESSION 2 SESSION 3 4-6 day writing session which usually takes place Online in April or May. During these days, the Lab's devoted script editors continue the in-depth process with the filmmakers. In addition, usually, online masterclasses with creative filmmakers are held, along with additional varied activities. Between the sessions, filmmakers meet the script editors online, to continue the work in progress. As the third session nears, the developed scripts are submitted for the jury's reading. At this point the producers and filmmakers are required to create a short scene which best reflects the artistic intent and vision of the film-to-be. Before the final session, the filmmakers receive a short pitching training. The final 3-5 day session takes place in July or September and is where the projects meet the world! At the pitching event, filmmaker and producer teams present their projects and scenes to the prestigious jury members, as well as to an audience of relevant decision makers and industry professionals from the international film circuit. One-on-One meetings create opportunities for the projects' producers to meet potential partners- co-producers, sales and distribution companies, funders and commissioners- and solidify their production packages. Based on the full script and the artistic vision, the jury awards production prizes totaling $50,000-$70,000, generously donated by the Beracha Foundation. *Prize amounts are subject to change.
